A 9-year-old Cohasset boy died Sunday when a car plowed into a crowded area where his family was vacationing in Maine.

Dylan Gold and his family were on vacation in St. George when a 2007 Infiniti driven by a 61-year-old woman spun out of control and hit the Gold family as they walked through the wharf in Port Clyde village.

"For an unknown reason, the operator lost control and accelerated, hitting a vehicle, then a building and a pedestrian who was trying to get out of the way," Chief Deputy Tim Carroll with the Knox County Sheriff's Department told NECN.

Dylan died in the ambulance while awaiting a LifeFlight helicopter. Another bystander, John Coggeshall, also suffered a fractured hip and head injury.

“It’s tragedy anytime a life is lost, but to have a 9-year-old is pretty difficult,” Caroll continued.

Dylan's mother was also severely injured in the accident. His 6-year-old brother Wyatt was flown to a Portland hospital and is in good condition.

The driver of the vehicle, Cheryl Torgersen of New York City, say she has no recollection of what happened, the Wall Street Journal reports.Blood test results will take several days. Torgensen was not harmed in the incident.
