College student killed on LIRR tracks

A 19-year-old University of Maryland student from Wantaugh was struck and killed by a Long Island Rail Road train on Monday afternoon.

Benjamin Sassoon was on his way to his parents’ home when he was hit by a nonpassenger train at 4:45 p.m. on the west side of the Bellmore station platform.

“We are in shock. I can’t believe this happened,” Benjamin’s mother Susan Sassoon told Metro. “He was a straight-A student; he loved soccer and music and played the guitar. He was so full of life.”

The MTA police are investigating the death as a possible suicide.

“He was a hard worker and had a great outlook on life,” said Henry Singson, Sassoon’s former boss at computer software company InTranS Group in Port Washington.

“He told me that he wanted to transfer from Hofstra to the University of Maryland because he wanted a challenge.”

A funeral service for Sassoon will be held tomorrow at Temple B’nai Torah.
