Convicted murderer charged with slaying of woman caught in West Philadelphia crossfire

Amin Gibbs, 33, who already served time for murder, has been charged in the death of 22-year-old Zykia Sanders.

Police yesterday arrested a convicted murder in connection with the Nov. 17 shooting death of 22-year-old Zykia Sanders in West Philadelphia.

Amin Gibbs, 33, of the 6800 block of Dicks Avenue in Elmwood, allegedly shot Sanders in the back outside the West Park Apartments on the 4400 block of Holden Street early that morning. Sanders, who investigators said at the time was not the intended target, died a short time later.

Gibbs was arraigned shortly after 5 a.m. this morning. He is charged with murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, assault, reckless endangerment and firearms offenses. Gibbs is also charged with attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment and firearms offenses for an alleged crime on Oct. 24, according to court documents. Gibbs was held without bail and is currently jailed at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility.

No stranger to the law, Gibbs was in 1997 found guilty of murder and sentenced to seven-and-a-half to 20 years in prison. He was again arrested in 2005 for burglary, theft and assault offenses, but those charges were withdrawn.

Gibbs was arrested less than a week after Sanders' shooting and charged with possession of a prohibited firearm and making repairs to or selling a prohibited weapon. He was as of Nov. 26 jailed in lieu of 10 percent of $450,000 bail while awaiting a Dec. 13 preliminary hearing in that case.
