A Charlestown man will appear in court Monday to answer charges that he allegedly got into a fight with a cabbie and then carjacked the taxi.

Sakaria Mohamud, 30, was charged with carjacking, assault and battery on a victim over 65, and shoplifting under $50.

A cab driver told police that when he pulled up to the Tedeschi’s on Main Street in Charlestown about 4 a.m. Sunday, he noticed a man fighting with a store employee and a security guard. The man, Mohamud, left the store, got into the cab and told the driver where to take him.

Fearing that Mohamud was intoxicated and having just watched him get into a fight inside the store, the driver refused to take Mohamud, who then refused to leave the backseat of the cab, the driver told police. A struggle between the driver and Mohamud ensued, and eventually Mohamud was able to get into the driver’s seat and drive away, police said.

Police said officers put out a description of the taxi and suspect. Other cab drivers radioed in that they had seen the cab on Massachusetts Avenue. Police eventually located the cab on Columbia Road near Interstate 93 and arrested Mohamud.
