Crowds gather outside Ground Zero

Over 3,000 gathered outside Ground Zero right now.

Metro's reporters are inside Ground Zero awaiting the President, who landed on a heliport near Wall Street earlier today.

Security was tight at the perimeter, with NYPD officials blocking subway entrances and an array of Secret Service and K-9 units standing at every block on Church Street and Broadway.

Crowds gathered outside Century 21 discount store, and a swarm of onlookers hoping for a glance of the president stood at the corner of Liberty and Church, crowding near the barricades an hour before the president is scheduled to arrive.

Bea Brache, visiting from Minnesota, at first planned to avoid the crowds today downtown. But, she said, "I'm just so enamored by the man, so I just had to come."

An NYPD officer estimated the crowd at 3,000 around noon.
