After appearing in court last week and visiting a New Bedford hospital Sunday for an undisclosed ailment, the 24-year-old murder suspect was in court again on Tuesday for a status hearing related to charges that he shot two men dead in Boston's South End in 2012.
A judge set a tentative trial date for May 28, 2015 for the double murder of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado and decided to rule on the defense's request for a gag order at an August 14 hearing. His defense wants the gag order to “safeguard against prejudicial pretrial publicity,” however prosecutors argue that Hernandez should not be treated differently because of his celebrity status.
Prosecutors say one of the victims accidentally bumped Hernandez, spilling his drink and causing the former tight end to go into a rage. They say Hernandez later pulled up along side the men in his SUV and fatally shot them, while wounding a third.
Hernandez , who has also pleaded not guilty to killing Odin Lloyd at an industrial park in North Attleborough in June 2013, was smiling and laughing with his attorneys in Suffolk Superior Court Tuesday. He was allowed to remove his handcuffs, and according to his attorney, wants to attend his next court hearing though he is not obligated to do so.
