The New York office of the Drug Enforcement Agency is warning local law enforcement to be on the lookout for a new heroin-based drug that officials worry is ripe to make inroads among youth.
“Cheese” — a combination of roughly 2 percent heroin and crushed Tylenol PM — showed up in Dallas in 2005. There have been just a few reports of it in New York, but the DEA expects it could see more.
“The cheese that was sold in Dallas fits all the demographics for New York,” said John Gilbride, special agent in charge of the DEA’s New York office. “We have the heroin user population here. We have the pharmaceutical abuse here.”
“More and more of a younger generation of teens to early 20s are abusing heroin by snorting it,” Gilbride added. “It’s lost its stigma as very dangerous drug.”
