It was a rare sight in Hingham Monday night when a passerby found a shark washed up on a town beach.

Hingham Police were called to Bathing Beach for the report of the washed up shark just before 7 p.m.

At the beach, which is located off of Route 3A, an officer found the shark. It had no signs of trauma and it was not immediately clear what caused it to wash up on shore, said Sgt. Steven Dearth.

The 5- to 6-foot-long shark was left on the beach because it was below the tide line. If the tide wasn’t able to take it out by Tuesday, Dearth said the town’s public works crews would remove it.

While there have been seals that have found their way onto the beach, Dearth said there hasn’t been a shark during his tenure.

“I’ve been here 20 years and never had that,” Dearth said.
