Seven battle-scarred pit bulls were rescued when police busted a dog-fighting ring that was operating out of an apartment in Brownsville.

The joint operation with the ASPCA revealed a makeshift arena, drugs to make the dogs aggressive, and treadmills to keep them in shape, DNAinfo reports.

A man who lived on the second floor of the apartment, Wesley Alexander, 39, was arrested and charged with weapons possession and animal cruelty after police found a .40-caliber handgun, ammunition clips and marijuana. He was released on $7,500 bail.

The ASPCA’s Blood Sport Unit was sent to the scene to perform a forensic analysis. Their findings will play a role in the prosecutors’ case against the people involved in the operation.
