Dorchester man arraigned in weekend sexual assaults

Officers yesterday arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with two attempted sexual assaults in Dorchester over the weekend, and they believe he may be connected to a third.

According to Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis, Walter Mains of Dorchester was arrested and charged with attempted rape, armed robbery and several other charges after he allegedly attacked a woman and threatened her with a gun near Harbor View Street just after 3 a.m. Sunday.

Mains allegedly approached a different woman on Savin Hill Avenue a few hours earlier that morning.

Mains was arraigned yesterday in Dorchester District Court and held on $50,000 cash bail.

He was already out on bail for a 2009 incident, according to police.

Officers are investigating a third sexual assault that occurred within that time frame Sunday; Mains fits the description given by the victim, but he has not been formally charged in that attack.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges will likely follow, according to police reports.
