The Democrats have their guy.

State Rep. Ed Neilson was selected Tuesday as the Democratic candidate for the open City Council seat.

Neilson, of Northeast Philadelphia, will run in the special election on May 20.

Former councilman Bill Green vacated his at-large seat in February when he was appointed chairman of the School Reform Commission.

Neilson, a graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School, is a lifelong member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98.

The Republicans have yet to choose a candidate, while aspiring Independent candidates are required to collect 1,785 signatures of register voters by the April 8 deadline.
