A dead body was found in the Spicket River in Methuen on Sunday afternoon, according to police.

Essex County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Carrie Kimball-Monahan said state police pulled the body of a 66-year-old white male from the river about 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Boston Globe. It was discovered by a man who was walking nearby.

Although foul play is not suspected, Kimball-Monohan said the situation will be investigated due to the manner in which the body was found.

State Police Capt. Kristopher McCarthy told the Eagle Tribune that the body was in 7 feet of water, andadded that investigators think the man “possibly” took his own life. Police did not find a suicide note near the body, he said. However, there were a few "articles" found along the riverbank.

The body was taken to the state Medical Examiner’s Office, who have yet to release the name of the victim due to pending notification of family members.
