MBTA ridership isn’t the only thing that might go up next year — by July 1 commuters are likely to see a fare increase, too.
During a meeting with the MBTA’s board of directors yesterday, Charles Planck, the senior director of strategic initiatives, said the wheels are in motion to examine service cuts and fare hikes on the T.
Planck said a lengthy process that includes examining impacts on ridership, several meetings with the T’s Rider Oversight Committee and a handful of public hearings must happen first, however.
A springtime vote is needed from the MBTA board for targeting the implementation by July.
MBTA interim General Manager Jon Davis said nothing has been decided yet, but the process is under way.
“We have contracted with an analytical arm to look at fare levels and service structures to consider how to address the budget gap,” he said.
It has been half a decade since the T raised fares.
