Authorities in Bucks County on Monday charged a father in connection with a devastating apartment complex fire in July that displaced about 100 people.
Police allegeHugh McKavanagh, 59, left his mentally challenged 15-year-old son home alone the night of the fire, the Bucks County Courier Times reports. While alone in his father's apartment at Middletown's Racquet Club, the boy emptied an ashtray into a trash can, apparently sparking the destructive four-alarm fire.
The July 26-27fire at the Veterans Road apartment complexdestroyed 43 units.

McKavanagh, who now lives in Bristol, has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a first-degree misdemeanor. He told investigators he left his son home alone for about half an hour while he went for drinks at a nearby apartment.
McKavanagh's son reportedly has the mental capacity of a 6-year-old child.
The official cause of the fire remains undetermined.
