Firefighters to promote safety program in wake of fatal Bridesburg blaze

A day after firefighters battling a blaze in a Bridesburg home found the body of an elderly woman, 92, inside, the Fire Department will be on the block distributing a home fire safety checklist and other preventative materials.

The woman was found around 6:30 p.m. on the 2800 block of Hedley Street. Firefighters will be there at 3 p.m. to install smoke alarms in surrounding homes and educate area residents about fire safety.

They will also be promoting the Fire Safety Representative Program, in which they will enlist a point person from each block to receive Fire Department emails concerning safety issues in the area and to email the Department with any fire-related questions or smoke alarm needs.

Those without smoke alarms who cannot afford them are encouraged to call 311.
