Fitness on the Plaza to run until end of month

As part of Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s Boston Moves for Health program, Fitness on the Plaza, which was scheduled to end over the weekend, will be extended through September.

The free exercise classes on City Hall Plaza, which include morning and evening boot camp and Zumba, have seen overwhelming turnout and positive feedback, according to a spokeswoman for the Boston Public Health Commission.

“These free fitness classes are too good to end,” said Menino. “We’ve seen such a positive reaction. People love being able to get out and get active in a whole variety of new and different ways.”

The mayor has challenged the city to collectively lose 1 million pounds and move 10 million miles in 2012.

The initiative aims to improve the health and wellness of the city by increasing access to free and low-cost physical activities and healthy living resources.

All Fitness on the Plaza participants are encouraged to keep track of their physical activity, weight-loss goals, and progress at BostonMovesForHealth.org.
