Food vendors might receive letter grades

A state senator wants to see letter grades on city food carts.

Sen. Jose Peralta plans to introduce a bill this week that would require the city’s Health Department to regulate food carts with letter grades – similar to the “A” or “Grade Pending” letters affixed to restaurant windows.

Frank Sobrino, Peralta’s spokesman, told Metro the vote could be as early as this week.

The Street Vendor Project supports the idea. Director Sean Basinski said yesterday, “The vast majority of them sell clean, delicious food – and they want to be recognized for that.”

The City Council has also considered letter grades, which Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he supports.
