The five men arrested for a homicide in Logan that ended in a dramatic SWAT raid in March were in court for a preliminary hearing Wednesday, at which one defendant’s charges were reduced from murder to conspiracy.

Tommy Savath, 21, Jerry Savath, 22, Davey Yath, 19, Rattanak Sarik, 28, and Sambatt Choub, 18, were arrested after 24-year-old Khoeum Roeun was shot to death while in a car outside the Savaths’ home about 6 p.m. on March 11. Roeun’s 23-year-old brother was also shot in the foot.

All five then barricaded themselves inside the Savaths’ home, on the 1300 block of Ruscomb Street. After several hours, SWAT officers entered the house and arrested the men, seizing five semiautomatic rifles.

Murder charges against Choub were dismissed for lack of evidence. He now only faces conspiracy charges.

The Savath brothers are also charged with the August 2012 shooting death of Nachgaie Newman, 24.

One of the defendants’ brother, who asked to not be named, said the victim was a longtime rival who provoked the incident by coming to the defendants’ home that night.
