In an effort to highlight state background check provisions, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords toured a gun show in upstate New York Sunday.

New York's Model Gun Show Procedures, touted by the attorney general during the tour of theSaratoga Springs Arms Fair, have been signed by roughly 80 percent of the of the state's gun show operators.

The procedures ease the burden of gun show dealers in conducting background checks required by the state and require show operators to tighten security measures.

"Everyone agrees on the need to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the dangerously mentally ill," Schneiderman said in a statement.

Giffords and her husband Captain Mark Kelly formed Americans for Responsible Solutions on the second anniversary of the 2011 Tucson shooting that nearly took her life. Jared Lee Loughner, serving multiple life sentences for the shooting, is believed to have mental problems.

The couple lauded the attorney general's gun show procedures.

"The state's model helps keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them —like criminals and the dangerously mentally ill —without infringing on our Second Amendment rights," Kelly said in a statement.
