SANDS POINT – The 25-room, 20,000 square-foot Sands Point mansion that many scholars believe was the inspiration for the grand estate in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” is set for demolition to make way for a five-lot subdivision.
Built in 1902, Lands End sits on a 13-acre estate in Sands Point, a village on the North Shore. One of the first owners of the stately residence that juts into the Long Island Sound was journalist Herbert Bayard Swope. He played host to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Groucho Marx, Dorothy Parker, and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald.
The current owner, David Brodsky, bought the property in 2004 for $17.5 million from the late wife of former Mets owner Charles Payson.
