Gilgo Beach murders: Ninth body found in L.I. beach

Police suspect they may have found a possible ninth set of human remains today at a Long Island barrier beach, near where eight dead bodies have already been found.

Police found the remains at 11:20 this morning on the north side of Ocean Parkway, about 1 and 1/2 miles from Jones Beach.

While expanding their search into Nassau County, police found several remains in the area this morning, but are all the remains of pets. People often leave their animals in the isolated Jones Beach State Park, about an hour outside Manhattan.

However, investigators are unsure if this latest set is human or animal bones, and the remains were sent to the Nasssau County Medical Examiner’s Office to be identified. The area where the bones were found has been roped off as a crime scene, said Det. Lt. Kevin Smith of the Nassau police.

Police are searching a few miles from where the remains of eight dead bodies were found near Gilgo Beach. Police have previously said the suspect a serial killer may be responsible for the murders.
