GIlgo Beach murders: Prostitutes in a panic over possible serial killer

The human remains found on Gilgo Beach keep piling up, and it looks like a serial killer is targeting prostitutes, but Long Island sex workers aren’t calling in sick to their night jobs.

They’re just arming themselves to the teeth before they hit the streets.

“I’ve been watching the news about what is going on at Gilgo Beach,” a Long Island sex worker who goes by the name of “Exit 55” told Metro. “Somebody out there is crazy and doing very bad things. I’m extra careful and carry a gun now and I never did before.”

But the 10 sets of possible murder victims found near Gilgo Beach — and the fact that at least four of the dead women worked as prostitutes — don’t change the facts of life, “Exit 55” says.

“I have a lot of bills,” she said. “I have to work.”

“I always carry pepper spray with me now,” said another sex worker who goes by the name “Hot Bun.” “Now I bring two people with me and they will wait in another room. If the customer doesn’t like it, I’m out of there.”

Last week, at least six prostitutes were arrested in Long Island during a two-day period, four inside a Ronkonkoma massage parlor and two in Bethpage, including one woman who propositioned an undercover policeman for sex for $310.

“This serial killer isn’t causing us to crack down on prostitution,” said a Nassau County police source. “We’ve been cracking down a long time.”

“I hate to say it, but if they [prostitutes] have to do it, they should at least let someone know where they’re going to be and they should definitely be on a heightened sense of alert,” the source added.
