A 10-year-old girl died after being pulled from the waters off Coney Island Beach in Brooklyn on Tuesday night, police said.
Bystanders tried to save Takara McDuffy, of Staten Island, and a 9-year-old girl when both children showed signs of distress in the water, police said. According to reports, Takara was playing on a jetty when she fell from the rocks.
Police responded to the beach around 7 p.m. Takara was taken to Coney Island Hospital and later pronounced dead, authorities said. The other girl survived.
The investigation is ongoing and the medical examiner will determine the cause of Takara's death.
The accident occurred near the Coney Island boardwalk at Stillwell Avenue, police said.In the summer, lifeguards are on duty at Coney Island Beach from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to the Parks Department. Swimming is forbidden outside of those times.
