Green Line to nearly triple 3-car train trips

The MBTA will nearly triple the number of three-car Green Line trains beginning Monday.

“As I’ve talked with Green Line customers over the past year, train capacity is an issue that is frequently raised,” MBTA GM Rich Davey said. “We have received that message loud and clear, and the MBTA is responding.”

Davey said the three-car trains will also make more room for commuters.

The three-car trains will increase their daily weekday trips from 13 to 32, including on the E-Line for the first time ever, and to Lechmere Station for the first time in six years.

The trains will not be expanded to the C-Line, however, because the platforms aren’t long enough. Still, Brookline resident Brian Kane is excited.

“I live on the Green Line and when I get [a three-car train] it makes my day,” said Kane, who also works for the MBTA Advisory Board.

“These are the sort of passenger enhancements that will actually drive real ridership growth.”
