Hit, killed on Third Avenue after slipping on snow

A man headed home after a night out Friday was struck and killed by an SUV in East Harlem.

A man headed home after a night out was struck and killed by an SUV in East Harlem after he slipped on snow in the early morning hours of Saturday.

Roman Alavez, 26, was killed as he was trying to cross Third Avenue at 111th Street at 4:20 a.m. Saturday, according to police. Alavez, who lived on 112th Street, was on his way home from a nightclub when he slipped and fell on snow in the middle of the street. He was then struck by a 1998 Dodge Durango traveling north on Third Avenue.

He was dead by the time emergency workers got to the scene. The driver of the Durango, a 52-year-old man, remained at the scene and was not charged with any wrongdoing in the death, which police are ruling an accident.

"I slammed on the brakes and honked the horn," the driver told the New York Daily News. "But one of the guys slipped under the car. I got out, but it was too late."
