Scores of T-shirts hang inside South Station now, each designed by a survivor of sexual abuse who included personal and bold messages.

“Where is the justice,” reads one shirt. “I love you daddy but … you tried to kill me and I will never forget,” read another shirt.

The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center put the shirts on display yesterday for sexual assault awareness month.

The awareness effort comes as a woman recently reported being indecently assaulted while walking in the North End and the editor of Boston University’s student newspaper resigned over a joke edition about rape and other assaults.

Those who spoke during yesterday’s kick-off event urged people to start a dialogue about sexual abuse.

“Sexual assault may be a difficult issue to discuss, but we must do so because everyone in the Commonwealth has a valuable role to play,” said Lt. Governor Tim Murray.

Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley, who has said that she is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and sexual assault as an adult, praised the T-shirt display as powerful.

“The messages are sobering, and they will make you uncomfortable — and I think that’s a good thing, because it’s the only way we can be sure we will never grow complacent in our advocacy,” she said.

The seventh annual Walk for Change along the Charles River will be held April 22. Hundreds of walkers will raise money for free services provided by the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center.
