Would you like some scams with your Sunchips? If you went to two downtown Duane Reade stories this winter, your credit card information may be at risk.
Employees at the 200 Water Street and 636 Broadway stories were found to have scanned customer credit cards illegally between October 2011 and February, potentially giving them access to your information.
The full legal notice is below:
Duane Reade recently became aware that credit card information for some customers of its stores located at 200 Water St. and 636 Broadway in Manhattan may have been illegally obtained. This may have occurred if a customer used a credit card at one of these two Duane Reade drugstores between Oct. 1, 2011 and Feb. 16, 2012. An employee at each store used an unauthorized device to scan customer credit cards prior to processing them through the store system. Duane Reade is very sorry and regrets that this happened.
As a result of this incident, the company wants to notify customers who used a credit card at these specific locations during the hours these particular employees were working, between Oct. 1, 2011 and Feb. 16, 2012. The information that could have been obtained included credit card number and expiration date, and other information contained on the card’s magnetic stripe.
No Duane Reade information systems were accessed during this incident. Therefore, the illegal activity was limited to the credit cards that the employee manually scanned with a device that was brought into the workplace. The employees involved have been arrested and are facing felony charges.
