Bill Marimow of the Philadelphia Inquirer, who was at the helm of the daily city newspaper since April 2012, is now out as editor in chief.

Marimow had also been the Inquirer editor from 2006 to 2010.

According to Philadelphia Daily News gossip columnist Molly Eichel, a memo was sent earlier today all staff from CEO and publisher Robert J. Hall that read:

Please be advised that effective immediately, Bill Marimow is no longer employed by Interstate General Media, Inc. We wish Bill well in his future endeavors. Stan Wischnowski will become acting editor of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Please contact Bob Hall or Michael Lorenca should there be any questions.

Hall said earlier today that the decision was made shortly after a 10:30 a.m. news meeting. Stan Wischnowski has been named acting editor.

According to Jimromenesko.com, a media blog, an Inquirer staffer said it was a total surprise.
