The gym, which currently is occupied by a discount furniture store, will be preserved with the help of federal funds.
"Smokin'" Joe Frazier, a former Olympic gold medalist and world heavyweight champion, died in November 2011. He lost the gym after suffering financial difficulties.
With the help of Temple University architecture students who advocated for the gym's preservation, it was granted historical status, Sen. Pat Toomey announced yesterday.
A statue of Frazier will be erected outside Xfinity Live! by 2014.
