Julian Edelman arrested for Halloween grope (UPDATED)

Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman might need to watch where he puts his hands.

The third-year player was arrested early this morning after allegedly groping a woman in a Back Bay bar. From the Suffolk district attorney’s statement:

Paperwork charging JULIAN EDELMAN, 24, with indecent assault and battery has just arrived in Boston Municipal Court, with the likely implication that he will be arraigned in courtroom 17 at some point this morning or early this afternoon. A Boston Police report indicates that Edelman was arrested just after 1:30 this morning on Exeter Street for allegedly groping a woman inside a Copley Square bar. Additional details are expected at arraignment.

We’ll have more details as they come in.

UPDATE I: Metro reporter Mike Naughton is on the scene at the courthouse. He’s got a police statement:

Early this morning at 1:30am, Officers responded to 90 Exeter Street for an A&B [assault and battery] in progress, on arrival it was determined that there was a victim of a indecent A&B that took place in the Storyville nightclub (the old Saint). Further investigation revealed that the suspect was Julian Edelman DOB 05/22/86. He was placed under arrest for Indecent A&B on a person who has attained the age of 14. He is expected to face arraignment shortly.

UPDATE: Edelman’s arraignment wrapped up about noon with the
football player being released on his own recognizance, per the request
of prosecutors. Edelman was ordered to stay away from the bar, the
victim and witness. His next court date is Jan. 10.

Edelman and his lawyer left the courthouse without answering questions
from reporters. On his way out of the building, Edelman did stop and
sign a football helmet for a man waiting outside.

Court documents revealed that officers were told by the female victim
that Edelman “reached under her costume and grabbed her vagina.”

A witness told police that Edelman bumped in to the woman and he saw the victim’s face change in to an expression of shock.

The victim and witness approached club staff and asked to have Edelman
ejected from the club. Staff then ejected the witness and the victim,
according to a police report, and Edelman denied the allegations.

The club’s manager told police that he was notified of an altercation on
the dance floor and that he observed the witness threatening to beat up
Edelman and the woman trying to calm down the witness.

The manager said it is club policy to eject all people involved in a
confrontation and that the witness was ejected first and later began a
confrontation with a passerby.
