The NYPD has an air force that can shoot down planes, said police commissioner Ray Kelly.
Kelly told “60 Minutes” interviewer Scott Pelley last night that “in a very extreme situation,” the NYPD could take down an airplane.
Kelly was describing a .50 caliber rifle that can be attacked to a police helicopter.
According to the New York Post, a weapon like this could blow through a a brick wall.
But Mayor Michael Bloomberg said today that even this weapon would not have averted the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
“It certainly does not mean 9/11 wouldn’t have occurred,” he said at a midtown conference.
He added that the NYPD “has lots of capabilities you don’t know about, and you won’t know about them.”
