Kennett Square: Mushroom Capital of the World

Chester County town produces more mushrooms than any other region across the globe.

Kennett Square is holding its 26th annual mushroom festival next weekend.

What is truly mind-blowing is that the Chester County town with a population of a little over 6,000 grows over 65% of the mushrooms consumed in the United States, harvesting over a million pounds a year. In fact, Kennett Square produces more mushrooms than any other region across the globe.

Is it just me, or is everyone else unaware that we are living a mere 30 miles away from the Mushroom Capital of the World?

The festival will run from Friday, September 9 to Sunday, September 11 at 14 W. State Street. Guests so far include celebrity chefs Jose Garces, Kevin Sbraga and Jennifer Behm.

For more about the weekend's events, which include a community parade, classic car show, 5k Mushroom Run, art auction, live music and cooking demonstrations, visit www.mushroomfestival.org.
