Police have arrested three suspects in the brutal Old City beating of Temple graduate Kevin Kless, 23, who was assaulted in the early hours of last Saturday. Kless, an insurance claims representative who took a job in Philadelphia mere months ago, was excited to live and work in the city, by all accounts.
Authorities arrested Felix Carrillo, 23, of the 4800 block of North Fairhill Street in Hunting Park; Stephen Ferguson, 20, of the 1100 block of Solly Avenue in Fox Chase and Kenneth Santiago, 19, of the 3800 block of Dugan Street in Juniata.
The three are accused of beating Kless to death in front of the old Second Bank of the United States building around 2:25 a.m. after Kless slowed a lane of traffic by talking to a cab driver on the 400 block of Chestnut Street.
The suspects were allegedly riding in a car that pulled behind the cab when police said they jumped out and punched and kicked Kless repeatedly, causing extensive head injuries, then fled in the same car. It is unclear if Kless and his attackers exchanged words before the assault. The driver of the car has not yet been charged but did not participate in the assault.
Police had recently revised the description of the suspects' possible vehicle. Investigators originally said it was a four-door late-90s maroon Mazda sedan but issued a statement late this week that the type of vehicle was undetermined.
They also retooled the suspects' descriptions late this week, issuing a release that the four men were light-skinned and possibly Hispanic after initially saying they were of Middle Eastern or Indian descent. Grainy surveillance camera footage likely complicated these determinations.
