Laugh Boston: Improv Asylum founders to open new comedy club in Seaport

Are you ready to “Laugh Boston”?

The founders of the Improv Asylum have partnered with other entertainment leaders in the city to launch Boston’s newest comedy club called Laugh Boston.

An event detailing the club’s launch will be held tonight at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel where the club will be located. It is expected to open in the spring of 2013.

The 6,000 square-foot space in the hotel next to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center will fill a venue void in Boston’s comedy club scene, Improv Asylum said.

When the Comedy Connection in Faneuil Hall closed in 2008 and moved to the Wilber Theater, its capacity jumped to 1,100 from about 400. Many of the other comedy clubs in and around Boston have a capacity of 100 to 150.

That variance has led to performers avoiding Boston, Improv Asylum said.

“A good portion of national names, and certainly regional and local stars, do not have the ability to ‘sell’ a larger theater. As a direct result of the gap in Boston’s market, the performers are forced to work in other cities and industries, such as convention appearances and cruise ships,” the North-End based comedy theater said in a news release.

Laugh Boston will have a capacity of about 300.

The group said it chose the Seaport area location in part because of the neighborhood’s rapid growth and quickly expanding amount of nearby hotel rooms.
