With sports season upon us, fans across New England can cash in on their play-by-play predictions thanks to Spogo, a free Boston-based mobile app.

With sports season upon us, fans across New England can cash in on their play-by-play predictions thanks to Spogo, a free Boston-based mobile app.

The idea behind Spogo, which launched six weeks ago, is that users are able to rack up rewards for making real-time predictions while watching NFL and MLB teams play.

There are roughly between 30 and 35 questions per game, and they can range from the traditional, “What will be the result of this drive?” to the quirky, “What color hoodie will Bill Belichick wear?”

Those who answer correctly can earn points toward food and drinks at 60 bars throughout Boston, Providence and New York City.

“The whole goal is not to distract people from the game, but instead, making the game more fun and interesting," said David Shack, who co-created the mobile app with Andrew Vassallo and David Thyresson in their North End office. "We ask just enough questions to keep the fans engaged, but not too many that they are anxiously looking at their phone. We feel it’s a good balance."

Below is a glimpse at the point/prize ratio:


  • 3,000 points=a private party for 25 at Paddy O's

  • 250 points=$5 off order at Drizly

  • 3,500 points=a private party for 15 at Hennessy's Boston

  • 450 points=half-off sliders at Bleacher Bar

  • 750 points=free appetizer at The Playwright


Creators came up with the idea for Spogo after realizing they were constantly making side bets while watching games.

A few thousand users have already downloaded the app. The largest portion of users come from the Boston area, however creators believe the app could eventually translate to other big sports towns, like Chicago, Philadelphia, and Pittsburg.

In the next few months, creators plan to extend questions to cover NHL games as well as the NBA and college basketball.
