Lindsey Stone has been out of a job since Wednesday, thanks to a photograph of her flipping her middle finger at Arlington National Cemetery’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during a business trip, but that apparently wasn’t enough for the creator of an online hate page that is calling for her to be lit on fire.
The page, created the day it was announced she no longer worked at Living Independently Forever, Inc., a non-profit based in Hyannis, played off of a page created last week that demanded LIFE “Fire Lindsey Stone.”
“Yes, because no one should have the right to freely express themselves. Get over yourselves,” wrote one commenter Sunday.
Another person had chimed in, “This page is ridiculous, it goes too far, just like (Stone) did.”
By yesterday that page had racked up nearly 130 “likes.”
The incident sparked a massive national response when news broke last Monday that Stone and her coworker Jamie Schuh were suspended from their jobs without pay for posting the photograph on a personal Facebook page.
However, backlash against the backlash has been brewing for days, with online debates heating up over whether the outpouring of threats and insults against the Plymouth resident are justified, or over the line.
Stone still has not shown her face since becoming one of the most hated women in America.
Attempts to reach her at home Sunday were unsuccessful, however last week she and Schuh issued a public apology, saying: “We never meant any disrespect to any of the people nationwide who have served this country and defended our freedom so valiantly.”
When asked what kind of response LIFE received from the public after accepting Stone’s resignation, LIFE Cape Cod Executive Director Diane Enochs said Sunday, “The photo understandably elicited a wide range of responses. We appreciate the fact that many people have expressed an opinion on the posting of the photo and our response.”
