Police are searching for a driver who fled a deadly car crash on Staten Island on New Year’s Day.

The incident occurred at about 5:07 a.m. near the intersection of Cassidy and Lafayette Avenues in New Brighton, police said.

Felipe Avila, 29, was traveling northbound on Lafeyette Avenue in his black 1996 Toyota Celica when he collided with a white 2003 Volvo S80, police said. Avila was transported to Richmond University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Volvo fled the scene on foot.

Cops determined that the Volvo’s driver was traveling eastbound on Cassidy Avenue and ran a stop sign when he struck Avila’s car. The driver then crashed into a parked Dodge SUV before getting out of the car and fleeing, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
