A Massachusetts man was injured when the jet ski he was riding with his 8-year-old niece on Lake Winnipesaukee suddenly blew apart on Sunday.

Andover resident Steve Mitton, 56, and his niece were at the Moultonborough, N.H. vacation spot whenthey were thrown from the vessel as Mitton attempted to start it at about 1:45 p.m., according to the Boston Herald.

Marine Patrol officers said both Mitton and the child were thrown from the jet ski. Milton broke his pelvis and the child has a head laceration.

“It was very loud. I say it sounded like a stick of dynamite exploding,” Tom Casale, of Deepwood Lodge Homeowners Association, told WCVB.

Marine Patrol crews arrived on the scene and put the jet ski back together. Officials said the watercraft will be taken for further examination so investigators can find out what exactly caused the vessel to explode while in use.

The duo was taken to Lakes Regional Hospital in Laconia.
