A Roxbury man with a 17-page record and eight aliases was arraigned Monday on charges that he committed seven thefts from various locations, including local libraries,in Boston and Cambridge.
Kevin Drayton, 49, pleaded not guilty to several charges including larceny from a person and receiving stolen property over $250, accordingto the Suffolk district attorney’s office.He pleaded not guilty.
The string of thefts dates back to December 2011 when Drayton allegedly stole a laptop from a student’s bag at Northeastern University’s Snell Library. Drayton is also accused of stealing a laptop from a bag of a patron at the Boston Public Library’s Copley Square location. He also allegedly stole wallets and backpacks from people at other locations including the Crema Cafe in Harvard Square.
“He operated anywhere people might leave their things unattended, even for a moment,” said Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley. “Fortunately, many of the thefts were captured on surveillance footage and we were able to identify him after the fact.”
Because of his 17-page record that includes 35 convictions, Drayton was indicted as a habitual offender.
