(UPDATE) Man charged with pointing laser at police helicopter

Someone pointed a green laser on the police helicopter from the 5200 block of Moutour Street Sunday night.

UPDATE, 9:59 p.m.: Police this morning announced charges against a Montour Street man accused of pointing a green laser at a Philadelphia police helicopter Sunday night.

Luis Martinez, 20, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and single counts of possessing an instrument of crime, simple assault and reckless endangerment. He could face federal charges, police said.

Police allege Martinez repeatedly pointed the laser in the eyes of the officers operating the helicopter above Olney on Sunday night about 9:15.

Officers on the ground stopped and detained Martinez on the 5200 block of Montour Street after the helicopter operators shone a spotlight on the porch from where the laser originated. Police allegedly recovered the laser from Martinez.

Two people were taken into custody Sunday night after a laser was pointed at a Philadelphia police helicopter.

Police were investigating a report of a woman screaming in Olney about 9:15 p.m. when someone pointed a green laser at the helicopter from the 5200 block of Moutour Street, 6ABC Action News reports.

Police took a suspect into custody about 9:30 p.m. No charges had been filed at of the time of this report.
