A man was fatally shot in Dorchester on Wednesday morning in what was an apparent home invasion that was stopped by a gun-wielding homeowner.

Boston police said officers were called to 85 Esmond St. about 9:30 a.m. One man was found dead at the scene, police said, and an investigation was begun.

The person who was fatally shot was one of two masked men who burst into the Esmond Street apartment and were confronted by the owner, who was armed with a gun, according to the Globe. The owner then chased the second suspect from the home; police apprehended him later in the day.

The homeowner is also in custody, as police check to see if he had a current firearm license.
