A man walking along Interstate 93 was hit and killed by a car traveling along the Expressway in Boston.

Authorities responded to I-93 southbound at about 1 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a fatal crash involving a car and a pedestrian, according to the Suffolk district attorney’s office.

The preliminary investigation suggests a 38-year-old Boston man, whose name was not released, walked into the left travel lane near the South Bay Center and was hit by a 2009 Mercedes Benz driven by a 47-year-old Brockton man.

The driver remained at the scene, called emergency officials and did not show signs of impairment, authorities said. His statements that the pedestrian suddenly appeared in the roadway were corroborated by a witness, authorities said.

The crash is under investigation and no charges have been filed.
