Metro's original story is below.

An alleged armed mugger was shot and killed by police early Thursday morning in the Bronx, according to NYPD reports.

Two uniformed officers on a routine patrol were flagged down by a 24-year-old man in front of 5 West Burnside Avenue around 4:07 a.m., a law enforcement official said.

The young man told them he was inside the vestibule of a Chase ATM waiting for a bus when a man who appeared to be in his 40s burst in with a gun out, the official said. The alleged mugger robbed the young man of an iPhone and approximately $80 then took off running.

The officers put out a description of the suspect over the radio, and started canvassing the area for him.

They spotted him a short while later, the official said, and a chase ensued.

Police were on his heels as he darted into the lobby of an apartment building on Davidson Avenue, the official said, and got into a physical altercation with the suspect.

The official said shots were fired, and the suspect was shot twice in the chest.

Earlier reports indicated the alleged robber turned and shot at the cops before the officers returned fire.

The official said the alleged robber was taken to St. Barnabus Hospital and pronounced dead. Three cops were treated at the same hospital for tinnitus, and a fourth was treated there for a hand injury.

A loaded Lorcin .380-caliber semi-automatic gun was recovered at the scene, the official said.

The NYPD's investigation into the shooting is underway. Another official said they expect to have more information by mid-morning on Thursday.
