Many hospitals have long wait for a mammogram

Women might wait months in some city hospitals to find out if they have cancer.

Women might wait months in some city hospitals to find out if they have cancer.

A new report released yesterday by City Comptroller John Liu revealed that women waited up to 50 working days, plus weekends, for mammograms at facilities like Elmhurst Hospital in Queens.

Weeks of waiting are typical for New York City women, Liu said, despite the urgency of scheduling a mammogram when a lump or other sign of cancer is present.

East Harlem resident Janice Greene, 59, had to visit a hospital several times within a month before getting a walk-in mammogram. She even considered a lawsuit when she finally found out she had cancer – after weeks of delay.

“I was livid,” she told Metro.

The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation argued that the 2009 data was too old.
