Summer has arrived -- and New York City has 14 miles of public beaches for fun in the sun.

Beaches maintained by the city's Parks Department are open from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day. No swimming is allowed unless lifeguards are on duty, which is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during beach season.

Be sure to check out if there are any water quality advisories, courtesy of the Health Department, before going to the beach. You can also sign up for alerts about your local beach and text BEACH to 877-877 to get real-time opening, closing and water quality information.

If you want to avoid the sand, check out our map of New York City's free outdoor pools.
