Mass. Red Cross launches national ‘zombie preparedness’ campaign

The American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts launched a new website over the weekend that aims to prepare people for the looming Dec. 21, 2012 doomsday deadline forecasted by the ancient Mayans.

SavingZombies.com, a facetious website, offers a count down to the alleged “apocalypse,” and tips on how to survive its potential natural disasters, like hurricanes, floods and earthquakes.

The kicker – the site also coaches people on how to make it in a post-apocalyptic zombie land.

“We want everyone to be prepared. We don’t know what is coming, but we know about the urban legend of the Mayan apocalypse, and how the world may change on December 21, so we’re asking everyone to be prepared,” said Kat Powers, the communications director of The American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts in Cambridge, where the national education campaign was spearheaded, along with help from a d50 Media, the Wellesley-based digital media company which created the interactive website.

The website also offers preparedness videos made by a panel of celebrities like RadioBDC personality Adam12, Jimmy Noonan, the villain from cult film “Super Troopers” and former Director of Security at the World Wrestling Entertainment; Melissa Shultz, a reality TV star from VH1’s Tough Love New Orleans; and WCVB Meteorologist David Brown.

Each had made a video of their own “go bags” – the lowest form of preparedness a person can have for a quick escape, and invite viewers to show off their own.

The bags would ideally contain necessities like flashlights, medicine, cash, important documents, and first aid items.

“Should you need to evacuate, think about what you’re going to need in the next three days, and put it in your go bag,” Powers said. “We have a lot of different things hitting us in New England – hurricanes, snow and ice storms, possible zombie infestations – we don’t know what could be thrown at us.”
