Three MassDOT employees, including the former Director of the Worcester Office, have been indicted for allegedly awarding snow and ice removal contracts to a family friend for their own financial benefit, Attorney General Martha Coakley’s Office announced today.
A Grand Jury returned indictments against Thomas Waruzila, 60, the former District 3 Highway Director at MassDOT, Dean Gleason, 42, the snow and ice engineer for District 3, his brother Anthony Gleason, 36, a Civil Engineer for District 3, and Quang T. Do, a family friend.
According to Coakley’s office, the defendant’s “undermined the integrity of the bidding process by scheming to illegally award contracts” to Do prior to the 2009-2010 winter season.
Coakley’s Public Integrity Division began investigating the defendants’ activities after MassDOT referred it in the fall of 2010.
The defendants each face several charges including conflict of interest, procurement fraud, obstruction of justice and conspiracy to commit procurement fraud.
According to a statement from MassDOT Secretary Rich Davey, "the alleged conduct of these individuals is unacceptable and out of line with the values of MassDOT."
Davey said they are all currently on unpaid leave.
