For the first time in MBTA history, ridership topped 400 million for a single fiscal year, according to T officials.
Average weekday ridership during fiscal year 2012, which closed on July 1, grew by 5.7 % over the previous year, T officials said, and averaged 1.3 million passenger trips each weekday.
“It was also the first time that daily ridership averaged more than 1.3 million for an entire fiscal year,” MBTA Spokesman Joe Pesaturo said.

Bus ridership saw a 5.9% growth, the subway a 5.2% growth, and trolleys saw the highest growth, bringing in 8 % more riders.
System-wide average weekday ridership for June 2012 increased by 1.5 % over June 2011, marking the seventeenth consecutive month of ridership growth, the longest such streak in MBTA history.
MBTA General Manager Jonathan Davis said the unprecedented ridership figures are the result of multiple factors, including the state’s continued economic growth, lower unemployment rates, the availability of real-time information for bus and train customers, and an overall improvement in MBTA service reliability.
