A medical marijuana bill cleared a major hurdle in the New York state legislature on Tuesday, passing the Senate Health Committee for the first time.

A medical marijuana bill cleared a major hurdle in the New York state legislature on Tuesday, passing the Senate Health Committee for the first time.

Sponsored by Staten Island Sen. Diane Savino, thebillwould legalize medical pot in the treatment of "certain severe, debilitating or life-threatening conditions," such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

The health committee passed the measure nine to eight votes.

"This vote is an enormous milestone in our quest to bring safe and reliable medical marijuana treatment to patients all across our state," the bill's sponsor, Staten Island Sen. Diane Savino, said in a statement. "Today, the Senate has taken a decisive first step in moving this legislation forward."

The bill will now move to the Senate finance committee. If passed there, it remains unclear if the measure will be brought to the Senate floor for a full vote.
