Mayor Thomas M. Menino said today he is on the hunt for two “green champions” to help lead Boston’s effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The “Greenovate Fellows,” will help expand Greenovate Boston, which supports and promotes sustainability initiatives in Boston’s business and residential community.
“Boston residents and businesses have been national leaders in taking concrete actions to reduce their energy use and taking bold sustainable measures,” says Mayor Menino. “Greenovate Boston will be able to give Bostonians a place to learn about what is taking place and steps they can take to improve their own lives and business.”
According to a Menino spokesman, Greenovate Boston aims to empower residents and businesses to lead the way to a more sustainable and healthy city by providing them with accessible resources and expertise. The Greenovate Fellows will champion this effort by acting as a central source for residents and businesses looking for information on sustainability practices and insights.
The Greenovate Fellows will work in the Environmental and Energy Services Cabinet at City Hall for two years. The Fellowship, which seeks entrepreneurial self-starters with three years of professional experience and a master’s degree in communications, business or environmental policy, is modeled on the Boston Urban Mechanic Fellowship Program that has brought many talented young professionals to work for the city.
“The Greenovate Fellowship is a novel approach to developing talented leaders who will help the City of Boston learn from and communicate with residents, as well as the business, civic and non-profit communities,” said Brian Swett, the city’s new Chief of Environment and Energy Services. “We are looking for dynamic, creative people who are passionate about addressing climate change challenges.”
The two Greenovate Boston Fellows will act as green champions for the city by helping develop innovative environmental policy and generating awareness and support for the city’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Fellows will help refine and implement performance measures for sustainability, develop campaigns to encourage critical sectors to participate in the city’s energy efficiency and renewable energy programs and support management of the Greenovate Boston brand.
